What Happens During a Regular Dental Exam?

Maybe you haven’t gotten a dental exam alone as an adult before, or maybe it’s just been so long you can’t remember – either way, you may not be sure what to expect. Between odd noises, getting poked and prodded, or having uncomfortable experiences in the past, it is normal to feel some anxiety about visiting the dentist for your regular checkup.

In our last post, covered why you should get your dental exam every six months. Now we’ll explore what happens when you come to Smiles on 35th  in Seattle’s Wedgwood for your regular check-up. Although regular dental exams may vary slightly based on your individual needs, most follow the same general pattern:

  • First, you’ll be greeted by our friendly receptionist. Then, you will fill out some basic paperwork and, if you have it, insurance information.
  • You’ll be called back into an exam room, where you’ll be asked to sit in a comfortable exam chair. We’ll cover your shirt with a special bib so you stay clean, and recline you comfortably during the cleaning and exam.
  • A dental assistant or hygienist will use a special brush and, using a small mirror as a guide, gently buff your teeth with a gritty polishing toothpaste. Sometimes a cleaning comes after an exam, and sometimes before – either way is normal. After thoroughly brushing your teeth, the hygienist will give you an expert flossing, all the while checking for soreness or unusual bleeding.
  • A physical exam of your teeth will show whether there are any problems. This often (but not always) includes x-rays. Your teeth, gums, and mouth will be checked for potential issues, including cavities, gingivitis, abnormal wear patterns, or anything else that might be cause for concern.
  • The hygienist or dentist will then remove any plaque and tartar buildup with a special tool called a scaler. Some people like this part of visiting the dentist, and some do not – it can be quite loud, and you may hear and feel scraping. This is normal. The more tartar you have around and in between your teeth, the more you will need to have it scaled. If you dislike this part of visiting the dentist, regular brushing and flossing is the best way to prevent tartar buildup.
  • Sometimes, your dentist will decide to give you a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is used as an additional means of protecting your teeth against cavities and is totally safe. There may be different flavors you can choose from.

Based on what your dentist sees during the checkup, you may need to come in for further treatment. Regardless of the state of your oral health, your comfort is our priority. If you have any questions about any part of your visit, feel free to ask.
